Elon Musk Loses OpenAI Lawsuit as Jury Sides with Altman and Brockman
A federal jury rejected Elon Musk's claims against OpenAI and its founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman after a three-week trial in Oakland. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers upheld the verdict, dismissing Musk's allegations of breached charitable trust and unjust enrichment as procedurally tardy.
Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 before leaving in 2018, had argued the organization abandoned its nonprofit AI development mission. The ruling also absolved Microsoft, which Musk had implicated due to its 2019 investment in OpenAI. While Musk retains appeal rights, the decision marks a significant setback in his protracted legal battle over AI governance.
